There are social, health, and economic reasons to relocalize food production. Farmers markets highlight these activities and provide a central market for local food production and consumption.
In this federated wiki site we explore farmers markets as systems. We start with an article in a hyperlocal rural newspaper in Whatcom County, WA, the Foothills Outlook
.
The article is We Are What We Eat, from the September 2025 issue in which Linda Kerth shares her vision of a future farmers market located somewhere in the Mt. Baker School District.
Kerry Turner and Marc Pierson identify some variables from the article and then develop a diagram of the relations between the variables. They are then joined by Christo Angelov and Christine McIntyre to further develop the model. Christo has helped manage an urban farmers market in Atlanta, Georgia.
# The activity in steps: Step 1: Identify the variable in the article Step 2: Clustered the variables in the article and gave the clusters variable names Step 3: Identified the relationships between the cluster variables Step 4: Added more perspectives, Christo as an expert in managing a farmers market. Step 5: We "decorated" the diagram with shapes and colors so different roles catch the eye. Step 6: We made a recording explaining the diagram. NEXT STEPS: * Make an explanatory page for each variable with immediately adjacent causes and effects laid out. The purpose of these pages is to engage readers in their own explorations of causes and effects. * Then we will use the federated wiki's Super Collaborator tool to allow users to connect these smaller diagrams--exploring what can be done in their communities.
